Награда, учрежденная в 1903 Дж. Пулитцером [ Pulitzer, Joseph], известным редактором и издателем газет "в целях содействия идеалам общественного служения, совершенствования общественной морали, развития американской литературы и прогресса в образовании" ["for the encouragement of public service, public morals, American literature, and the advancement of education"]. Присуждается с 1917. В настоящее время кандидатуры для получения этой премии утверждаются Школой журналистики Колумбийского университета [School of Journalism, Columbia University], основанной Пулитцером. Ежегодно присуждается восемь премий в области журналистики (включая карикатуры и газетные фотографии), шесть в области литературы различных жанров, и одна в области музыки.
